Shanghai Evening News, which ran a report the other day of Apple?s Phil Schiller supposedly denying the company would ever offer a cheaper iPhone, has completely backed out of its original coverage. Instead, the publication is now saying that Schiller merely said Apple wants to ?provide the best products,? but won?t blindly pursue marketshare while doing so.
The Chinese paper?s first report quoted Schiller as saying the company ?will not push a cheaper smartphone for the sake of market share.? This followed up a story by The Wall Street Journal that claimed Apple was very much interested in working on a less expensive version of its popular mobile handset.
For every iteration of the iPhone, there?s always a report surrounding the possibility of a cheaper version. Some bigger handsets recently have been hitting at very low price points (with two-year contract), so perhaps Apple is aiming to corner that market. Or, more likely, the company is considering the notion so it can tackle more emerging markets. But why not just lower the price of its iPhone 4S, which is still pretty fast and comes with Siri?
I guess we?ll find out in the coming weeks and months.
