In the first month of 2013, the legal services sector dropped 2,400 jobs, erasing gains in December, according to the Labor Department.
After revisions, December saw legal jobs increase by about 2,000, not the 1,000 originally reported.
Overall, the sector has added 6,500 jobs over the past year.
The economy added 157,000 jobs last month, signaling a slow start to the year. The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9%
Professional and technical services as a group ? which includes legal, accounting and bookkeeping, architecture and engineering, computer systems design, and management and technical consulting ? accounted for 14,800 new jobs in January, according to the Labor Department.
Management and Consulting made the largest gain, with 11,500 new jobs.
