(AP) ? South Carolina star Marcus Lattimore was taken to a hospital and is out indefinitely because of an injury to his right knee suffered against Tennessee on Saturday.

Lattimore was running through the left side when he was struck around the knees by Volunteers defensive back Eric Gordon, Lattimore's right leg whipping around and slamming against the turf. South Carolina trainers immediately rushed to his side, keeping Lattimore flat on his back as the junior attempted to sit up and see the injury.

"I just tried to tell him to stay mentally strong," said receiver Ace Sanders, whose eyes teared up when discussing Lattimore. "I saw the look in in his eyes when he was on the ground and he was really heartbroken."

Lattimore was taken off the field on a cart and went to the hospital for further evaluation. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier didn't give details of the injury, only that it was every bit as devastating as the one to Lattimore's left knee last fall at Mississippi State. Lattimore had surgery to repair ligaments and cartilage, then needed six months of rehabilitation and recovery before he was cleared to return to action.

The school announced after No. 17 South Carolina's 38-35 win that Lattimore was out indefinitely.

Quarterback Connor Shaw said the Gamecocks were feeling down on the sidelines after watching Lattimore leave.

"But I felt like we bounced back and really played for him," Shaw said.

Shaw threw for a career-high 356 yards. He passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) broke a two-game losing streak.

Despite last season's injury, Lattimore was considered one of the SEC's best running backs and a likely NFL first-round pick if he opted to leave school early.

This injury looked as devastating as in 2011 and could keep Lattimore off the field the rest of this year, too.

After several minutes lying on the field, Tennessee's players came out to wish Lattimore well. South Carolina's entire team followed as the crowd at Williams-Brice Stadium chanted Lattimore's name.

"I told him we loved him and to hang in there," Spurrier said.

Spurrier sent Lattimore a game ball through the team chaplain.

Lattimore's mother, Yolanda Smith, joined her son in the locker room.

Former South Carolina defensive lineman Melvin Ingram, a first-round pick of the San Diego Chargers last April, posted on Twitter, "Your in my prayers bro." Several other sports figures sent their wishes via social media, including U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach, LSU coach Les Miles and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Lattimore started the season strongly, but he and the Gamecocks ran into problems the past two weeks at LSU and Florida. Lattimore rushed for 48 yards combined in those games because of a hip bruise.

Coming into this game, Spurrier had said Lattimore was 100 percent and would carry the load for the Gamecocks. Lattimore rushed for 65 yards, including a breakaway 28-yard TD run, in the first half against Tennessee after coming in with 597 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns this season.

He became an instant star as a freshman, rushing for 1,149 yards and 17 touchdowns. Lattimore was on his way to eclipsing those numbers as a sophomore until the injury at Mississippi State. He holds South Carolina records with 41 overall touchdowns and 38 on the ground.

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said his players rallying to Lattimore's side was indication of the enormous respect players have for South Carolina's star.

"Nobody wants to see that happen," he said.

Parents shaken after NYC nanny accused of killing kids

?

The New York nanny who police say fatally stabbed two children in her care was reportedly enduring financial problems and seeking professional help. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

By David B. Caruso and Meghan Barr, NBCNewYork.com

The nightmarish case of a?nanny accused of stabbing to death two children in her care?stunned the family's well-to-do neighborhood and caused legions of parents to wonder how well they know who is watching their kids.

The nanny lay in critical condition Friday with what police said were self-inflicted knife wounds, and investigators were unable to question her, in part because she was still breathing with the help of a tube.

Her motive and mental state remained a mystery, authorities said, and no charges were filed.

On Thursday evening, the children's mother, Marina Krim, took her 3-year-old daughter home from a swim lesson to find her other youngsters, ages 2 and 6, dying of knife wounds in the bathtub of their Upper West Side apartment near Central Park. The nanny then turned the blade on herself, police said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the investigation has yet to reveal anything amiss in the household before the slayings.

There are tens of thousands of nannies working in New York City, but reports of serious violence by caregivers against children are exceedingly rare. Parents are accused of killing their own children with far more frequency.

'A horrible tragedy'
More common are stories about nannies like Brunilda Tirado, who threw her body over a stroller to protect a baby from falling debris during a building collapse in the same Manhattan neighborhood in 2005. She suffered a broken arm and other injuries.

The slayings will undoubtedly prompt many parents hiring a nanny to check references more thoroughly and swallow hard over the possibility that they might unknowingly hire a person who would do their child harm.

A woman looks at a memorial left outside the Krim family apartment in New York on Oct. 27, 2012.

"For working parents this is a nightmare. Every mother I know is asking today, 'How do I go back to work?'" said Denise Albert, who has two young children and lives a few blocks from the site of the tragedy.

She stopped by the building to pay her respects, recalling a painful time she had to fire a nanny after 3 1/2 years when she found out the woman was lying about where she was taking the kids.

"It's the most difficult relationship in the world," she said.

Albert said the two college students now caring for her children after school feel like members of the family.

Some parents said their trust in their nannies is unshaken.

"It's a horrible tragedy, but it doesn't make me question my nanny at all," said Elizabeth McCarthy, a single mother of a 6-year-old boy. "For me, I found somebody I trust. She's an incredible part of my son's life. She's a wonderful person, she's raised children of her own and this doesn't make me in the least bit question anything about her."

Across the street from the building where the Krims live, several nannies with children in strollers stood as if stricken, watching police officers milling around the entrance.

Michelle Person, a nanny from Jamaica, broke down thinking about the children who were killed.

"You just feel like it was the kid that you were taking care of, too. It's horrible," she said, her eyes filling with tears.

She said she loves the 11-month-old boy she cares for as if he were her own son.

Another nanny, Karen Henry, said she felt uncomfortable walking around the neighborhood after the deaths.

"Parents are looking at you as though you're responsible for what happened," she said.

Thin line
Multitudes of parents think of their nannies as Mary Poppins-like heroes and trust them completely, but the relationship can be a complicated one. There is maybe no other profession in which the line between family and workplace, employer and employee, is so thin.

Two years ago, New Yorkpassed a law to protect nannies from financial exploitation. The nannies commonly work 10- to 12-hour days, for an hourly wage similar to that of a full-time employee at Walmart, usually without benefits.

Sharon Weatley, a writer and actress who is a former nanny and now relies on baby sitters to take care of her daughters, ages 4 and 14, said that if the Upper West Side nanny did indeed kill the children, "she is obviously crazy and this is a chemical imbalance going on in a horrifically tragic situation."

Thursday's slayings evoked the case of Louise Woodward, a British teenager who was convicted of killing a baby in her care in Newton, Mass., in 1997. That case prompted discussion at the time about whether teenage au pairs could handle the stress of caring for a stranger's child. Woodward served less than a year in jail.

This nanny's case is different. She is older and had experience. Police said she went to the Krims on a referral from another family.

Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and co-author of the book "Mothers Who Kill Their Children," said that while many women who kill their kids feel trapped, in most cases a nanny who thinks she is at breaking point with a difficult child can walk out.

She said it's not uncommon to hear of a family in which the nanny or baby sitter quits, leaving a note or just never coming back.

"Moms can't do that. There's no way out for them," Meyer said. "For a nanny, there is an out."

MMA Gloves And Mixed Martial Arts - How One Can't Exist Without ...

Mixed martial arts are purely contact sports that will at times exude aggressive moves in a person. Practitioners of mixed martial arts should therefore make it a point to have all the proper gear for their own protection.

What the intensity that engulfs participants as they face off on the floor in a mixed martial arts bout is enough to understand the role played by the MMA gloves. Ever since this sport first broke ground and slowly worked its way up to be one of the most popular contact sports, you will notice how the use of gloves has always been an integral part of it. A player will never be complete without it, such is its importance in the practice of the sport. Every time they practice, they would have to perform moves such as grappling, kicking and punching. All the more reason for the players to have MMA gloves while doing these moves.

The sport may seem like a ruthless game, with all its body contacts and moves that can knock a standard person down. Safety comes first; that is the common thread that can be found in the set of rules that governs this sport. These rules are all-encompassing, meaning, even if you are a teacher of the sport, you would have to follow the rules just as the fighters are also obeying them. The dress code of the practitioners of the martial art is outlined clearly and succinctly in the rules. This is in addition to a whole set of rules concentrating on the allowed mixed martial arts moves as well as proper conduct and behavior in and out of the fighting arena. The dress code in mixed martial arts always include gloves. Everytime you are practicing the art, whether in a match or just in a rehearsal, a glove should always be worn. This isn't a strict rule, however. Still, even advanced players heed it.

Bearing in mind that this is a contact sport, most of the moves entail the use of hands hence the use of gloves is necessary. This protects the hands while executing the moves such as punches and grappling. There are a lot of MMA gloves that practitioners can choose from, depending on the moves they often make. These include the fighting gloves used for the actual bout, the sparring gloves that are common during practice sessions, and the bag gloves used when practicing with the MMA bags. You will notice that the glove's types will depend on what area of the sport will be tackled.

It is easy to spot the difference between sparring gloves and the fight gloves worn during an actual match. Unlike sparring gloves, fighting gloves are more absorbent, probably due to the added layers and thickness. The fabrics used ought to be comfortable when worn, and being absorbent is also a must. During a match, the practitioners tend to perspire a lot. As a result, their hands may have a difficult time executing grappling moves if they don't have gloves that can absorb the sweat. You may have noticed how many glove's fingers are short and open. That is because the focus is the palm. Since most gloves nowadays are made from leather, the grip will be more firm.

The martial artist's personal tastes and preferences would also have a lot to do with the final choice of gloves that they will use. While the gloves will meet the acceptable standards, issues of design, color, and fit leans more towards personal tastes. If you love the sport or intend to start, you definitely need to invest in good MMA gloves.

A fabric with the power to ward off pathogens

How's this for cool threads? Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have been crafting a high-tech fabric for the military made out of tiny carbon nanotubes ? hollow structures that stay breathable in hot weather yet are small enough to block out pathogens. For an extra layer of safety, they're planning to add a special coating that will block out even the smallest toxins, such as anthrax spores and other chemical and biological warfare agents.

The technology is still in the concept stages, but the research has already received funding from the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency. It's easy to see why it appeals to the military: Clothing made out of this material could replace the heavy protective gear that can weigh soldiers down in desert operations. Francesco Fornasiero, a chemical engineer at the Bay Area lab, discussed the technology's potential.

Carbon nanotubes have been used to make tougher bicycle parts and stronger epoxy. Why did you decide to use them to make fabric?

We developed membranes which have pores that are made only of carbon nanotubes. These pores have walls that are extremely small. The smoothness of this wall and the hydrophobicity [ability to repel water] are together responsible for the extremely rapid transport rates observed for both gases and liquids.

How fast does it rid itself of anything that tries to stick to it?

For liquids like water, the transport rate of these pores is about 1,000 times or more faster than what you would see in other pores of similar size. For gases, it's on the order of 100 times faster.

So based on this initial observation several years ago, we started thinking of other applications. This was one of them: breathable fabric.

How does it work?

So these tubes made of carbon span the entire thickness of the membrane and they have a diameter that is tiny, on the order of a few nanometers. [DNA molecules are measured in nanometers.] The material we built is significantly better than Gore-Tex, if you want a comparison for a typical breathable material.

However, breathable fabric has huge pores, much larger than what we have in our membranes. We are able to reject particles as small as five nanometers completely. Biological threats, the smallest ones, are on the order of tens of nanometers.

What kinds of threats are we talking about?

Biological threats could be toxins, could be viruses, could be spores and so on. One of these specifically mentioned by the military is Staphylococcal enterotoxin [which causes food poisoning and has also been considered as a biological warfare agent].

But something must be able to get through, no?

Biological threats cannot fit in. But when we're talking about chemical threats, then we are talking about components that could be smaller than 1 nanometer in size. And that would be able to go through the pore.

So basically we propose two coatings. The first one is able to recognize the presence of a chemical warfare agent, react with it and as a result of that reaction, it shrinks in volume and ends up blocking the pore. The second concept is based on materials that are actually able to deactivate the threat ? react with it and decompose it ? and self-exfoliate. You will need a thick enough coating that allows you to use the same garment several times. It's like peeling off the protective skin from a surface.

So the fabric is good for more than a one-time use?

We are thinking right now to develop the project for repeated use. The idea is you have your suit, you wear it, you go in a contaminated environment. Then you can do a washing or treatment after you use your clothes to restore the initial conditions.

What does it feel like?

How I can describe it? It's like a thick plastic bag, at this stage. But this is not optimized for actual wearing. This is just the material we made to prove that the concept of breathability works.

Do you see yourself wearing it anytime soon?

It's too early to say that. But yeah, we hope so.

Our project is for five years. After that, there are going to be a number of other considerations put into place, including mechanical resistance, launderability, wear resistance, the cost of manufacturing, etc. Let's say we take five years or more. So I would say at least 10 years. It could be easily more than that.

How useful could this "fabric" be?

I think if we demonstrate that the process really works it would be game changing, because right now what the military uses are garments for protection that are very heavy and not breathable. So as a result, they can only wear them for a short amount of time. Otherwise they may sweat too much and the body temperature goes up too much. Imagine wearing a heavy coat running in the desert when it's 45 degrees Celsius [113 degrees Fahrenheit].

This interview has been edited for space and clarity.

Powell standing by Obama in 2012 presidential race

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a longtime Republican, is sticking with President Barack Obama in this year's election.

He told CBS' "This Morning" he respects fellow Republican Mitt Romney but thinks he's been vague on many issues.

Powell said the president got the United States out of Iraq, has laid out a plan for leaving Afghanistan "and didn't get us into any new wars."

He praised Obama's economic performance, saying, while difficult choices are ahead on taxes, spending and budgetary policies, "steadily, I think we've begun to come out of the dive and we're gaining altitude."

Obama later called Powell to thank him.

Powell, a retired general, was also a White House national security adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Powell says he's still a Republican.

Nowadays there?s a very large misunderstanding among a Detail Technician and Car Washer. At any day, someone will go buy a power washing machine, some soap and wax and title them selves a detailer. With regards to rejuvenating the paint with a $50,000 automobile which 1 would you like?.or a skillfully educated detail technician or a dude who wipes cars? Stop over and allow them to demonstrate how they are able to expertly detail your current automobile.

Seat stains are so frustrating!! Many times either the stained area grows larger the more you try to scrub, or it appears to be gone only to return once the area dries. What about those gray cloth seats that water stain with the slightest drip of water? If you try to clean them, more stains!! NESCom students work with some of country music's biggest acts on ...

BANGOR, Maine ? Country music fans have reason to be envious of seven New England School of Communications seniors who recently were surrounded by some of the best the genre has to offer.

The group returned this week from an immersive weeklong cruise, where country music was a constant companion. While nearly 2,400 adoring country music fans took in more than 100 live performances, NESCom students worked behind the scenes to make sure the shows went on without a hitch.

The idea to bring the students onboard came from Tim Cabral, a 1990 NESCom graduate, who started Florida-based Cruise Production, a company that organizes cruises featuring music from artists ranging from Tim McGraw and Lynyrd Skynyrd to KISS and New Kids on the Block.

The roster on the Norwegian ?Pearl? as it visited the Caribbean Oct. 14-21 included headliner Blake Shelton, and country stars Trace Adkins, Lee Brice, Easton Corbin, Randy Houser, Jerrod Niemann and Neal McCoy along with 17 up-and-coming country acts.

?This was the best of the best, I swear half of Nashville was there,? said Eric Ferguson, interim director of Audio Engineering at NESCom who went with the students.

Cabral reached out to NESCom to offer an opportunity for seniors in the school?s Live Sound Technology program to work as stage crew on board the ship during its week at sea.

Cabral?s company covered plane tickets and other travel expenses and gave the students rooms on the ship in exchange for their work setting up shows, according to Ferguson.

?It was actually kind of thrown in my lap,? Ferguson said.

He said some of his students hadn?t flown before, and one had never left the state. One thing all students had in common is a passion for music and desire to work in the industry.

?Being on the ship really opened up the eyes of all of us,? said Chris Daniels, a 21-year-old NESCom student from Exeter, N.H., who worked on the cruise. He said students worked long days setting up equipment for performers around the ship. The group ran wires and set up amplifiers, microphones and other equipment for various musicians who played on stages across the ship, including poolside, Daniels said.

?We worked with an outstanding crew who really knew their stuff,? Daniels said.

While Daniels said he and his classmates aren?t huge fans of country music, they appreciate any genre and are just happy to have the opportunity to get involved in the music industry and meet artists and potential future employers.

?We all have a great skillset coming from the sound program [at NESCom],? Daniels said.

Ferguson said the trip was a success. Every student came away with offers for summer freelance work in the music industry, he said.

?They shined, the students did so well,? Ferguson said, adding that he fielded compliments from performers, crew members and other staff on the ship, who lauded the students for their hard work and strong understanding of audio technology.

?It was an outstanding experience that I wouldn?t trade for anything,? Daniels said.

Cabral has cruises booked through 2015 and has told the school he?s likely to invite more seniors to come help out in the future and learn more about what goes on behind the curtain in the music industry, Ferguson said.

NESCom will host an open house from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, for anyone who might be interested in attending the school for any of its programs, according to Ferguson.

Bailout, layoffs: New pain ahead for EU carmakers

PARIS (AP) ? The extent of the European car industry's troubles was laid bare Wednesday, when France's government tossed a financial lifeline to the continent's No. 2 automaker, Peugeot Citroen, and Ford said it would shut a plant in Belgium, cutting 9,500 jobs.

Experts say France's ?7 billion ($9.1 billion) bailout, a three-year loan guarantee, represents a desperate attempt to avoid the sort of layoffs that companies like Ford are slowly accepting as inevitable.

The problem is the region's carmakers are selling too few cars in Europe, where the financial crisis has caused demand to dry up, and have too many factories. Even Germany's automakers, which had weathered the economic downturn relatively well, are not immune.

"The actions that should have been taken three years ago are starting to be put into place," said Tim Urqhart, senior analyst at IHS Automotive. "It speaks to the gravity of the situation and the seriousness of where things are."

In return for the Peugeot bailout, France's Socialist government asked for greater influence at the carmaker, including a government position and a workers representative on a supervisory board. That would help it avoid job cuts at a time when unemployment is stuck above 10 percent.

"My government has no intention of just giving, of offering a gift without anything in return," Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on French radio station France Inter.

Peugeot, which says layoffs are key if the carmaker is to recover, faces a Nov. 15 deadline in its negotiations with the government over how to handle job losses.

It's the first French intervention in the industry since a ?6 billion loan package to Peugeot Citroen and Renault in 2008-2009 when the economy was reeling from a financial crisis that triggered a global recession.

But the European car industry didn't undergo the dramatic overhaul that U.S. bailouts prompted among its carmakers. Peugeot Citroen has struggled since, and is especially vulnerable to the downturn in southern Europe, which makes up more than half its sales and shows no signs of emerging soon from widespread debt problems.

Ford, which expects to lose more than $1 billion a year in Europe, has been pursuing plant closures and layoffs more aggressively.

The company, which sells a quarter of its cars in Europe, announced Wednesday the closure of a car plant in eastern Belgium ? one of its main European factories ? by the end of 2014. It will result in 9,500 direct and indirect job losses.

"This is taking us by surprise and is an extremely bitter pill," Christian Democrat union representative Johan Lamers told The Associated Press in Belgium.

Fears were mounting that the axe may also soon fall in Britain as trade unions at Ford's Southampton plant have been called in for a meeting with management on Thursday.

Ford's move, which still must be negotiated with Belgian employee unions, is far swifter than anything General Motors has been able to accomplish in Europe during the most recent economic downturn. GM also wants to cut its factory capacity in the region and is in negotiations with unions to shutter a plant in Bochum, Germany, in 2017. GM's last factory closure in Europe was an Opel plant in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2010.

GM is also trying to consolidate costs with an alliance with Peugeot: They announced the joint development of four automobile lines to be released in 2016 on Wednesday, saying the alliance would save them $2 billion by 2017. The joint Peugeot- GM program will make a small van for GM's Opel and Vauxhall brands and serve as the basis for a compact crossover vehicle for Peugeot. They'll also develop a new, low-emissions small car and work together on mid-size cars and small vans.

But built into the alliance's four-year timeline is an assumption that the European market will soon bottom out.

"They have overcapacity and big dependence on the European market," Urqhart said.

And even France's latest plan is not guaranteed. European Union regulators generally frown on state intervention into industry, although during the 2008-2009 financial crisis they gave swift approval to France's previous bailout.

Joaquin Almunia, the European Union competition commissioner, said the EU has not yet been formally notified of the latest plan for Peugeot but said the governing body would assess it carefully. Peugeot's CEO Philippe Varin said the government guarantee was at market rates and he expected the EU to look favorably on it.

"The health of (Peugeot) is critical for France," Varin said.

Figures released Wednesday illustrated the problems Peugeot is facing. Sales fell 3.9 percent in the third quarter to ?12.93 billion from ?13.45 billion in the same period last year. Automotive division sales were down 8.5 percent, hurt especially by a weakening European demand and the suspension of deliveries to Iran. Sales increases in China and Russia shored up the company, as has the expansion of the GM alliance.

Peugeot's shares are down more than 60 percent since the beginning of the year, and dropped further on Wednesday. The company will offer no dividends for the term of the bailout, and executives will receive no stock options during that time.

"The main thing the government wants in return, it's really a change in governance" at Peugeot, said Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, the government spokeswoman.

Luxury carmakers such as Germany's BMW AG or Volkswagen AG's Audi brand have generally coped better than the mass market producers, but Daimler AG on Wednesday reported lower third quarter earnings and lowered its full-year outlook.

The maker of Mercedes Benz cars saw its net profit declining 11 percent to ?1.20 billion ($1.6 billion) from ?1.36 billion a year ago amid flat unit sales. The full-year operating profit outlook was lowered to ?8 billion, down from last year's ?8.8 billion.

In Italy, one of the worst-hit by the economic crisis, car sales have sunk to 40-year lows, hurting the earnings of another regional giant, Fiat, the owner of Chrysler. Its CEO, Sergio Marchionne, has abandoned a proposal to invest ?20 billion in Italy because of weak demand and is expected to announce soon its plans for production at Italian plants that have been idled for weeks.

Robert Schulz, an analyst for Standard & Poor's who covers Ford and General Motors, said automakers in Europe are going to have to drastically adjust expectations to determine "what a new normal is" after six years of decline.

"Sales are going to be down in Europe," he said. "Whatever excess capacity they have is only going to get worse."

Snooki Talks About Motherhood & How She Has Changed on the Today Show (Video)

When we first met Nicole ?Snooki? Polizzi she was totally focused on Guido?s with muscles, tanning and getting her drink on while Jersey Turnpiking on the dance floor.? Two months after delivering her son Lorenzo the already slimmed-down reality star sounds like a completely different person.? Snooki and her baby daddy, Jionni LaValle, have hit the publicity circuit, giving random interviews that coincide with MTV?s final season of The Jersey Shore. ?Snooki thinks her son already takes after her,

?I think that he just always craves attention, and I feel like that?s me,? Snooki told Savanna Guthrie on the?Today?show this morning. ?He always wants to be held and cuddled. ?I definitely partied [enough] for like three people my entire life, so I feel like now I have a family, I have a baby, and this is just a new chapter in my life,? the reality star said. ?And I love it, I?m just so excited.?

Snooki gets it and is voluntarily trading in nightly parties for family time. She already has Halloween planned out for her crew, ?I?m being wonder woman, [Jionni] is going to be captain America, and Lorenzo will be superman,?

So many Jersey Shore fans assumed that Snooki wouldn?t survive her pregnancy without partying and those same people expected her to be a lousy mother but from the looks of things, she?s off to a good start.? Will Snooki keep her life together and continue putting Lorenzo first?? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Nancy and Roberto's Boston Public Garden Civil Ceremony | Boston ...

Simple, pure, honest, family, love and happiness? these are the take home messages that Dan and I took home from Nancy and Roberto?s Boston Public Garden Civil Wedding Ceremony. These two walked up, read over the plan and then simply took their place before their closest family and friends. The ceremony began humbly and with only one intention: to join these two in legal marriage forever. They laughed, she cried a little bit, and they promised to love each other forever. With a kiss and an embrace they were married.

Behind them, we could see over 3 brides and 3 bridal parties, and even one very happy?Quincea?era group! Even though they were all lovely, I felt like we were with the coolest couple in the park? the CITY for that matter. The only thing that mattered that day to them was love and it showed. Walking around with them we passed a crazy stressed out bride focused intently on her photos and I looked back at Nancy and Roberto and loved that they had just gotten married too? and she was happily walking around the park, with all the attention going to the other brides. It was a really sweet feeling for me, to see that humility and the happiness that these two were showing on this, their wedding day.

We had a blast in the park and then headed to their dinner, where they hosted?their?family?and friends, celebrating?their?newly born marriage. It was a wedding I will never forget.

Syrian violence spills into Jordan, Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Jordanian soldier was killed in clashes with armed militants trying to cross the border into Syria on Monday and sectarian clashes overnight in Lebanon left four dead as Syria's civil war spilled into neighboring countries.

Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah said the soldier was the first member of the country's military to be killed in violence related to Syria's civil war. He died in clashes with militants trying to illegally enter Syria to join rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's regime. Maaytah did not say whether the militants were Jordanians or foreign fighters trying to jump into the fray in the neighboring country.

A statement by the Jordanian military said the soldier was killed in a shootout with a group of eight suspected militants armed with pistols and machineguns. Jordanian troops detained the suspected gunmen and authorities are questioning them, the statement said.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner blamed Syria, saying "the onus for this kind of violence rests squarely on the Assad regime."

A number of foreign Islamists have been fighting in Syria alongside the rebels. Jordan's banned Salafi movement ? which promotes an ultraconservative brand of Islam ? has sent several fighters to Syria in past months and Jordanian border patrols have caught some of them recently.

In Lebanon, troops launched a major security operation to open all roads and force gunmen off the streets, trying to contain an outburst of violence set off by the assassination of a top intelligence official who was a powerful opponent of Syria. Sectarian clashes overnight killed at least two people.

Sporadic cracks of gunfire could be heard in the Lebanese capital as troops began the operation a day after the funeral for the slain official, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan.

Opponents of Syria have blamed the regime in Damascus for the al-Hassan's killing in a Beirut car bomb on Friday. With Lebanon already tense and deeply divided over the civil war next door, the assassination has threatened to drag the country back into the kind of sectarian strife that plagued it for decades ? much of it linked to Syria.

In the Lebanese capital, soldiers backed by armored personal carriers with heavy machine guns took up position on major thoroughfares and dismantled roadblocks. At times, troops exchanged gunfire with Sunni gunmen.

Al-Hassan was a Sunni who challenged Syria and its powerful Lebanese ally, the Shiite militant group Hezbollah. The uprising in Syria is dominated by the Sunni majority fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, who like many in his regime is a member of the Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Lebanon and Syria share similar sectarian divides that have fed tensions in both countries.

Most of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Lebanese Shiites tend to back Assad.

The assassination has imperiled Lebanon's fragile political balance. Many politicians blamed Damascus for the killing and angry protesters tried to storm the government palace after al-Hassan's funeral on Sunday, venting their rage at leaders they consider puppets of a murderous Syrian regime. But were pushed back by troops who opened fire in the air and lobbed volleys of tear gas.

Meanwhile, cease-fire efforts by U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi appeared to be faltering.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said Damascus supports the truce proposal, but would not commit to halting fire during a four-day Muslim holiday until Western countries and their Gulf allies stop supporting rebels and halt their weapons supplies to the anti-regime fighters.

Brahimi met with Assad in Damascus on Sunday as part of his push for a cease-fire between rebels and government forces for the Eid al-Adha holiday, which begins Oct. 26. He told reporters following a closed-door meeting that he also had held talks earlier with opposition groups inside and outside the country and received "promises" but not a "commitment" from them to honor the cease-fire.

SANA said Assad assured Brahimi that he supported his effort, but that any political solution to the conflict must be "based on the principle of halting terrorism, a commitment from the countries involved in supporting, arming and harboring terrorists in Syria to stop doing such acts."

The U.N. peacekeeping chief, Herve Ladsous, said Monday that the United Nations is already planning for a peacekeeping force in Syria should a cease-fire take hold and pending a Security Council mandate.

Ladsous said, however, it is still too early to say how many peacekeepers might be deployed in such an eventual force.

Diplomats say that Ladsous has told Brahimi he could put together a force of up to 3,000 peacekeepers in the event a longer truce took hold.

But Ladsous said, "it certainly would be premature to mention a figure because it would depend on the situation." He spoke to reporters at a U.N. briefing in New York.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged the international community to support Brahimi and his cease-fire proposal. Ashton toured the Zaatari refugee camp Monday, the first day of her five-day visit to the Middle East.

Jordan hosts around 210,000 Syrian refugees ? the largest number in the region, according to the U.N. refugee agency. The Zaatari camp is home to some 35,000 Syrians.

More than 33,000 people have been killed since the uprising started in March last year.

Syrian authorities blame the revolt on a foreign conspiracy and accuse Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the U.S, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom they describe as "terrorists."

Paul Kurtz, "giant" of humanism, dead at 86

GENEVA (Reuters) - Paul Kurtz, a leading U.S. philosopher who devoted his life to fighting prejudice against people who reject belief in a god and promoting a non-religious stance in life, has died at the age of 86, websites reported on Monday.

The secular humanist Center for Inquiry (CFI), which he founded in 1991, said the one-time Buffalo university professor - who as a young soldier helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp in 1945 - died in Amherst, New York, at the weekend.

"He was one of the most influential figures in the humanist and skeptical movements from the late 1960s through the first decade of the 21st century," said an obituary issued by CFI -which he had left over a succession dispute in 2010.

In Geneva, he was hailed by Roy Brown, chief representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council for the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) which Kurtz co-chaired from 1986-1994, as "a giant of our movement".

Brown, a former IHEU president, said Kurtz was especially important for founding in 1969 the not-for-profit publishing house Prometheus Books that issues works critical of religion that many other publishers are reluctant to handle.

In recent years, the U.S.-based Prometheus has brushed aside threats to publish studies on the origins of Islam that question the traditional history of the faith, and on the situation of atheists and agnostics in Muslim countries.

Kurtz, born into a New York Jewish family in 1925, wrote or edited more than 50 books on ethics without religion, critiques of religion and the paranormal, and on skepticism, or the challenging of received wisdom.

When receiving a lifetime award for his work in 2007, he declared: "I am a secular humanist because I am not religious. I draw my inspiration not from religion or spirituality but from science, ethics, philosophy and the arts."

His last book, "What is Secular Humanism?", appeared in 2006. 30 years earlier he founded the journal "Free Inquiry" which circulates widely in U.S. universities and is credited with driving a shift from religion among younger Americans.

Kurtz is widely seen as the forerunner of what is sometimes dubbed the "New Atheist" movement - represented by figures like British biologist Richard Dawkins, French philosopher Michel Onfray and U.S. professor Daniel Dennett.

He is also known for inventing the term "eupraxsophy" to describe philosophies of life like secular humanism that reject supernatural belief and emphasize the importance of living an ethical life based on reason, logic and science.

His "Center for Inquiry" - aimed at fostering a secular society based on those principles - spawned a movement that spread from the United States across the world from the 1990s, and today has offshoots in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Sudan: 660 dead since 2011 in fighting with rebels

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? Sudan says that fighting in two states along its disputed border with South Sudan has left over 600 people dead over the past 16 months, releasing rare casualty figures in an ongoing conflict that has inflamed tensions between the two countries.

Interior Minister Ibrahim Mahmoud told the Sudanese parliament Tuesday that 662 people had been killed in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where rebel forces are battling government troops, since fighting broke out in June 2011. The minister's comments were quoted by the daily paper Al Sahafa on Wednesday.

Mahmoud said that the military and police sustained heavy losses in battling the insurgency, but did not break down the figures between civilian, government, and rebel casualties.

The fighting pits the Khartoum government against rebel groups allied with the guerrilla forces that eventually came to power in South Sudan, but were left on the north's side of the border after the south became independent in July 2011 according to a deal that ended decades of civil war.

It broke out first in oil-producing South Kordofan shortly before South Sudan's declaration of independence, then spread to neighboring Blue Nile state. Rights groups have reported government bombings of villages in the Nuba Mountains region of South Kordofan during the fighting. The Sudanese government has denied bombing civilians in its Nuba Mountains campaign.

A spokesman for the rebels told The Associated Press by phone that his group rejects the figures. "The government of Sudan is continuing to lie and give false information," said Arnu Lodi of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, questioning the government's ability to gather statistics on the fighting. He declined to provide any casualty figures of his own.

Khartoum says the SPLM-North fighters are backed by South Sudan, an accusation the Juba government denies.

The United Nations estimates that nearly 700,000 people have been displaced or severely affected by the fighting in the two over the past fifteen months. More than 200,000 alone have fled to neighboring Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Since the fighting began more than a year ago, access to the remote region by the United Nations and international aid agencies has been restricted by the Sudanese government, making it difficult to verify conditions in the area.

Meanwhile, this week the parliaments of Sudan and South Sudan both ratified an agreement signed by the two countries' presidents last month in the Ethiopian capital. The deal calls for a cessation of all hostilities that brought the countries to the brink of all-out war earlier this year. The deal enables the resumption of oil exports from South Sudan, which the Juba government suspended in January in a dispute with Khartoum over transit fees for southern oil.

Also, an ambush by unknown assailants killed a U.N.-African Union peacekeeper in the western region of Darfur, the mission said, bringing to 43 those killed in the region since the mission started its work in 2007.

UNAMID said in a press release that three others were wounded in the ambush Wednesday in North Darfur state as a convoy was on its way to assess reports of violence in the region of Habasha North.

The release said UNAMID personnel came under a combination of automatic and mortar fire by unidentified assailants. It called on the government of Sudan to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

At the United Nations, the Security Council issued a statement condemning the attack "in the strongest terms" and called on the Sudanese government to "swiftly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice."

Sudan's government has been battling rebel groups in Darfur since 2003. More than 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Four Nigerian peacekeepers were killed and eight wounded in an ambush in Sudan's restive West Darfur region on Oct. 2.

Cranberry Juice Drops Blood Pressure : Easy Health Options?

Cranberry juice has steadily gained a reputation for improving health and as a particularly helpful food for protecting the bladder and urinary tract. And now studies indicate that antioxidants in cranberry juice also effectively support the cardiovascular system and lower blood pressure.

Researchers have measured the effects of cranberry juice on blood pressure as part of a controlled diet over the span of two months.

At the end of two months, blood pressure values for people drinking low-calorie cranberry juice dropped from an average of 121/73 mmHg to 118/70 mmHg. The researchers believe the antioxidants found in cranberry juice are responsible for bringing down the blood pressure readings.

Do Your Homework Before the Interview | Healthcare News ...

Do Your Homework Before the InterviewOnce you?ve landed that all-important job interview, your next move is to gather as much information about the company as possible. To do that you?ll need to scout around. Remember the scouting motto ? be prepared!

Every job candidate should know what the prospective employer?s product is, if the company had a good year and if the corporation is global or local.

?Having more than a casual understanding of the company shows a commitment to the company and provides insight into how you?ll work if hired,? says Bill Coleman, senior vice president of compensation at Salary.com in Wellesley, Mass. ?Nothing turns off an employer more than interviewing someone who doesn?t have a basic understanding of their business, products or industry.?

Coleman explains that by understanding the core values of the company, job seekers can make a point of highlighting their own personal goals that support those same values.

?Research the company in professional journals, newspapers, associations, on the Internet and research the company product,? said Kenneth Goldberg, assistant professor for public administration at National University in San Diego, CA. ?Find out how the industry is doing and who their major competitors are.?

To be competitive in the job market, accurate and timely information is essential. You can gather a tremendous amount of business intelligence on the Internet. Here are some Web resources:

  • www.hoovers.com for public and private businesses.
  • www.business.com for news and research on 10,000 public and 44,000 private companies.
  • The career center at your alma mater and the alumni association.

Five to 10 hours of good research should be enough to be prepared with a solid understanding of the company, suggests Coleman.

Leonard P. Morrison, director of the MBA Center for Career Development at F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College, near Boston, says research will allow the job seeker to develop a holistic understanding of the organization.

This understanding can be tested by a single interview prep question that every candidate should be prepared to address: ?For the next 20 minutes talk to me about our firm, our industry, the job for which you are applying and why you are the best candidate for the position.? Morrison says if you can answer that question, you?re ready to take on the job interview.

Time spent gathering information before the interview can take some of the apprehension and anxiety out of the process.

Now, take a deep breath and show your future employer you?ve done your homework.
