Nick Faldo knows exactly what to do to begin his new season in the 18th tower. Get some food.
"I can put a mute button on myself and just let him do all the talking. I'll just bring my sandwiches up to the booth and listen to him," Faldo joked.
Well, perhaps Faldo can at least say, "Here's Johnny." As in Johnny Miller, who at times sparks the ire of players as golf's most candid analyst. Miller, lead voice for NBC, and Faldo, main voice on CBS, will pair up for the entire week of the PGA Tour's season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii on Golf Channel beginning Friday.
While the multiple major winners have shared the booth briefly in the past ? and were enshrined into the World Golf Hall of Fame together in 1998 ? they have never spent an entire week sitting, and talking, side by side.
Don't expect much silence.
"I have great respect for Johnny on and off the golf course," said Faldo, who also does early-round coverage for Golf Channel. "I'm used to working with characters ? I have Gary McCord and David Feherty and Peter Kostis to deal with. I'm quite used to being pretty sharp and pretty quick to keep the show going."
Miller knows he'll have to be on his toes, too.
"To be honest with you, we have a nice little repertoire between the two of us. There is sort of like an older brother-younger brother feel to it. We're not afraid to sort of challenge each other and get a little spark going," Miller said. "It should be energizing and invigorating to have him next to me and have him poke me and chide me for a little bit. That will be new for me."
Will Miller return fire?
"Oh, yeah, you don't have to worry about that part of it," he said. "I'll be ready. It should be a great way to start the season."
