Ergo launches the GoNote Mini, a 7-inch tablet / netbook hybrid, we go hands-on

Ergo launches the GoNote Mini, a 7inch tablet netbook hybrid, we go handson

We first encountered Ergo Electronics at last year's Gadget Show Live, and since then the Birmingham-based tablet maker has graduated from its humble back-of-the-hall origins to become a major player. Its product range has swelled beyond its original budget ICS slates with a range of AIO PCs, thin-and-light laptops and even a Windows 8 tablet that has more than a few strong hints of a KIRF Surface about it. Now it's launched the GoNote Mini, a scaled down 7-inch version of the education-ready tablet / netbook hybrid that's been doing the rounds since last summer. We got to spend a few minutes playing around with the first production prototype and if you'd like to know more, after the break is where you want to be.

Caroline Kennedy to be nominated as ambassador to Japan

gty caroline kennedy thg 130401 wblog Caroline Kennedy to Be Named Ambassador to Japan

Caroline Kennedy is expected to be nominated U.S. ambassador to Japan, but the nomination is not yet finalized, a knowledgeable source told ABC News Monday.

Kennedy, the only living child of President John F. Kennedy, is a lawyer and author of 10 books, including a text on the Bill of Rights and a collection of her mother's favorite poems.

In the past election cycle, Kennedy campaigned for President Obama at several events in swing state New Hampshire. She contributed to the Obama campaign narrative that Mitt Romney would have been the wrong candidate for women.

She endorsed Obama back in January 2008 in an op-ed that compared him to her father. During the 2008 election, she led the effort to pick Vice President Joe Biden.

She was strongly considered to be next in line to take Hillary Clinton's Senate seat in New York when she withdrew to serve as secretary of state in January 2009, but at the last minute, Kennedy took herself out of consideration for that position, because of a "very private family matter." A book about the life of her uncle, Ted Kennedy, suggests her children might have been the reason she opted out.

The 55-year-old Kennedy daughter is largely considered one of the more private members of the politically prestigious family.

Kennedy has recently served as the president of the Kennedy Presidential Library and an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics.

John Roos has served as U.S. ambassador to Japan since August 2009. He was the first in that role to attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, remembering the horrors suffered after the dropping of the atomic bomb. Other ambassadors to Japan have included John "Tom" Schieffer, brother of "Face of the Nation" anchor Bob Schieffer, and former White House Chief of Staff Howard H. Baker.

Ericsson T28z review

Ericsson T28z review

When Ericsson launched the T28 in 1999, it was the lightest and slimmest phone on the market. It was also the first handset ever to use a lithium polymer battery. The T28 was a premium device -- Ericsson described it as "designer technology", and it was successful with business executives before the Blackberry became popular. Unlike its bar-shaped competitors, the T28 was immediately recognizable by its signature antenna stub and "active flip" keypad cover. Ericsson packed the phone with state-of-the-art features like voice dialing and an optional Bluetooth dongle. It came in three versions: T28s (GSM 1800 / 900), T28z (GSM 1900) and T28 World (GSM 1900/900). Our T28z review unit started life on VoiceStream (eventually acquired by T-Mobile). How does this classic handset stack up to our modern pocketable computers? Find out after the break.

Egypt pound slips on black market as supply dries up

By Asma Alsharif

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Egyptian pound has fallen sharply against the dollar on the black market in the last few days, market participants said on Sunday, citing dwindling supply of the U.S. currency.

They forecast a further decline unless more hard currency enters the market.

Egypt, which has suffered political and economic instability since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted more than two years ago, is struggling to curb a run on the pound, which at official rates has fallen 9 percent against the dollar this year.

The currency's value on the black market has dropped even further and faster. Five market participants said dollars were being offered at rate of 7.55 pounds on Sunday, compared to 7.45 pounds just a few days ago. The official interbank rate is 6.80 pounds to the dollar.

One foreign exchange dealer attributed the recent fall to increased demand from importers as they seek to meet their dollar needs for second-quarter imports.

"For amounts of $10,000 or above the rate is 7.55 pounds to the dollar. Lower amounts are at 7.50 pounds. It's been like that for two days because supply (of dollars) is scarce," one dealer in the parallel market said.

"The supply will be even lower within two or three days because there is lots of demand. If they don't add to the foreign reserves then the price of the dollar will go up."

Egypt's foreign reserves dropped to a critical level of $13.5 billion at the end of February, barely enough to cover three months of imports, from $13.6 billion the month before. Reserves before the uprising in 2011 stood at $36 billion.

The central bank, which is due to announce its foreign reserve level this week, said on Thursday that levels have not declined significantly in March even though it used $1.3 billion for imports including essential commodities and oil.

In order to control the decline in the local currency the central bank introduced weekly dollar auctions in December. At Thursday's auction the bank sold $38.4 million to banks at a cut-off price of 6.7931 pounds to the dollar.

Through the auctions the government is rationing its supply of dollars and giving priority to importers of essential goods, leaving other importers to meet their hard currency needs via the parallel market.

Dollars are available but at rising prices, said one executive at an Egyptian company that imports goods from abroad.

The recent jump in prices is an indication of a black market that is drying up due to higher demand than supply, one banker who declined to be named said.

"Clients who work on parallel markets confirm that prices jumped. This is a major leap that happened in the past three days because of the lack of availability," he said.

"It is not dry yet but it is not as liquid as it was ... It is quite possible for the dollar to reach 8 pounds or even higher if the problem continues," he said.

To draw in more investors, the central bank reopened a scheme this month that guarantees foreign investors in Egyptian stocks and government bonds will be able to recover their hard currency when they sell despite the shortages in the country.

Egypt is trying to cut its budget deficit in order to secure a $4.8 billion International Monetary Fund loan to help its ailing economy and address its foreign exchange crisis. A technical team from the Fund is due to visit Cairo on Wednesday to discuss the deal.

Restorative justice: One high school's path to reducing suspensions by half

In one tough high school in Oakland, Calif., a restorative justice program has cut suspensions in half in just a year.

In the open-air corridor just outside his classroom, Eric Butler could hear snatches of escalating conflict: two girls talking trash about Mercedes Morgan ? calling her the B-word and, even worse, a liar.

He saw Mercedes standing apart, pretending not to hear. He called the senior into his room. She was reluctant, resisting his first attempt to find out what was going on. So he started over and introduced himself, made her laugh, asked about her life. He didn't dress or talk like a typical teacher, and he lived nearby in the 'hood.

Here's what really got her curious: He apologized. He told her what he always tells students when he first introduces himself as the restorative justice coordinator at Ralph J. Bunche Academy: "A lot of adults have been promising you things and not following through, and I'm sorry for that. It won't happen with me. I don't blame. I don't punish."

His role, he explained, is to help people resolve problems and repair harm.

Mercedes finally opened up, telling him her friend was accusing her of stealing shoes from her house. It took another half-hour before she trusted him enough to admit it was true ? and that she'd been afraid of what might happen if she "punked out" and didn't fight. The 18-year-old had been fighting with girls since elementary school, as if she didn't know any other way.

All three girls agreed to attend a "circle," an eye-to-eye talk in the folding chairs in "Eric's room" that are always set up in the round. The anger was palpable at first, but Mercedes apologized ? and explained that she'd stolen the shoes to sell them so she could help her mom pay for a drug test. If her mom could prove to the court that she was clean, she might be able to get Mercedes's younger siblings returned to her from protective custody. When the other girls saw Mercedes crying, they empathized and gave her a hug. They didn't ask her to replace what she'd stolen, but they wanted to know that, going forward, she would be trustworthy.

That was shortly after Mercedes had arrived last fall at the 250-student Bunche Academy, a continuation school where she was sent after being expelled because of too many fights at Oakland High School.

"It was cool, because if Eric wasn't here, I probably would have been suspended, but he taught me a way to handle things," Mercedes says. She has surprised herself by managing to avoid fights ever since.

Restorative justice, which has cut suspensions by more than half at Bunche, is one of several strategies the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is embracing as it attempts a seismic shift in the culture of discipline ? from punitive to preventive, exclusion to inclusion.

A model of restorative justice

Increasingly, adults here are tossing lifelines to students who've had trouble at home, felt harassed by police, or witnessed traumatizing crimes in one of the most violent cities in the country. Oakland's overall rate of suspension mirrors the nation's, with about 7 percent of OUSD students suspended in the 2010-11 school year. School discipline is now a focus because, for years, African-American students have been suspended and expelled at very high rates.

In the 2011-12 school year, African-Americans made up 32 percent of Oakland's students but 63 percent of the students suspended. In middle schools, principals suspended about 1 out of 3 black boys.

The US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights investigated whether the discipline was discriminatory. Before making a legal finding, OCR collaborated with the district last fall on a five-year voluntary resolution plan to reduce suspensions, expulsions, and the racial disparity.
