ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A U.S. soldier held by Afghan militants will not be harmed despite the Obama administration's decision to declare his alleged captors a terrorist group, a senior member of the Pakistan-based Haqqani network told The Associated Press on Saturday. However, the United States and NATO can expect stepped up attacks, he said.

The commander, who spoke by telephone from an undisclosed location, denied that the Haqqanis held the only American prisoner of war of the Afghan conflict, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, as the U.S. believes. He did however say that Bergdahl was a captive of another branch of the Taliban, and denied earlier reports that the 26-year-old soldier from Hailey, Idaho, was in danger.

"I deny the remarks . . . that this will endanger the life of the American soldier," the commander said, speaking on condition he not be identified because field commanders fear being targeted if their identities are known.

"We are not cowards and we consider it as coward to harm prisoners," he said.

The U.S. says that Bergdahl has been held by the Pakistan-based Haqqanis since 2009. However, the commander suggested he was with militants on the other side of the Afghan-Pakistan border.

"The American soldier is with the Emirate center (a reference to Taliban based inside Afghanistan) . . . The Americans also know it."

He said the Taliban leadership council previously issued instructions to its commanders, including those belonging to the Haqqani network, not to harm prisoners.

From his home in Idaho, the soldier's father Bob Bergdahl welcomed the assurances but was cautious.

"That's great news, but we're very careful about the information we digest," he told the AP. "I'll have to validate that and check that."

The elder Bergdahl said the commander's promise not to mistreat prisoners "was the position of the Emirate even before my son was taken prisoner."

Yet the Haqqani commander said the network is planning a series of retaliatory attacks against U.S. and NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, the organization's military commander, is seeking permission from Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar to stage a blitzkrieg of attacks against U.S. forces in Afghanistan, he said.

"He (Sirajuddin Haqqani) wants to carry out 80 to 100 attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan and 20 attacks on other NATO members," said the commander in retaliation for the designation. He repeated earlier statements that the Haqqani network answered to Mullah Omar and was not separate from the Taliban organization.

But once Mullah Omar signs off on the actions, the commander said, "we have our consultative and military council which plans attacks."

The commander claimed that the Obama administration had been in touch with the Haqqani network last year as part of its efforts to broker a peace deal ahead of the withdrawal of U.S. military troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"(U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham) Clinton should have the courage to tell the Americans about their contacts and even talks with us," he said.

Congress insisted Clinton deliver a report on whether the Haqqanis should be designated a terrorist organization by Sunday after a string of high profile attacks on U.S. and NATO troops.

The U.S. had resisted the terrorist designation because of fears it could jeopardize reconciliation efforts between the U.S. government and insurgents in Afghanistan.

This week?s post is Self Assessment. Take time this week to do a self inventory of what you want to improve about yourself. Before you can get your house in order you must first get you in order.

Here are 5 things you can do to assess yourself.

1. Look at why you do what you do. What do you think contributes to the disorganization you are experiencing?
2. Identify your weaknesses. What can you improve on? What will you need help with?
3. Identify your strengths. What are you really good at?
4. Set a personal goal for improvement. What do you want to improve about you personally and by when?
5. Forgive and let go. Mental clutter contributes to home clutter. By letting go of past hurts and moving toward the future you free up your mind and therefore can focus on organizing your home with a clearer head.

Tracking fish through a coral reef seascape

Ocean scientists have long known that juvenile coral reef fishes use coastal seagrass and mangrove habitats as nurseries, later moving as adults onto coral reefs. But the fishes' movements, and the connections between different tropical habitats, are much more complex than previously realized, according to a study published September 3 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The findings have important implications for management and protection of coral reefs and other marine environments.

A number of studies have demonstrated a strong relationship between the presence of coastal wetlands and offshore fish abundance and fisheries yield, but it has proved difficult to develop quantitative assessment of habitat use by fish or their movement among different habitats. "The rationale for this study,"says Simon Thorrold, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), "was to determine the relative importance of different nursery habitats to reef fishes that spend their adult lives on coral reefs but may spend at least part of their juvenile residency elsewhere."

The study also advances understanding of the functional connectivity of coral reef fish in a tropical seascape, says WHOI biologist and study lead author Kelton McMahon. "Traditional methods of assessing nursery habitats ? visual surveys of abundance and size of fish in different locations ? provide important but indirect evidence of connectivity among essential habitats. We developed a quantitative method that identifies essential nursery habitat, and allows reconstruction of migration within the seascape."

The method analyzes isotopic signatures recorded in fish tissue. These signatures, unique to each environment in which a fish lives and feeds, are laid down in its otoliths, or ear bones, creating a record similar to that of tree rings.

"Otoliths are constantly and permanently recording the conditions a fish is experiencing at any time," explains Thorrold. What a fish eats can be traced back to a particular food web, which makes it possible to track where a fish went throughout its life.

Thorrold, McMahon, and Michael Berument of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia first analyzed food webs in five specific habitats in the Red Sea off the northern coast of Saudi Arabia: coastal wetlands, coastal reefs near the shoreline, reefs on the continental shelf less than 60 meters deep, patch reefs around a continental offshore island, and oceanic reefs surrounded by deep open water. They used those data to create an isoscape, or map of the unique isotope signature of each location.

They then collected adult Ehrenberg's snapper (Lutjanus ehrenbergii), a commercially important snapper widespread throughout tropical and subtropical waters. With gas chromatography, the researchers measured compounds in otoliths of individual fish, working their way back to layers created when each was a juvenile. They matched each fish's signature to one on the isoscape, identifying with a high degree of accuracy the habitat an individual fish occupied as a juvenile.

This made it possible to look at movement of juvenile fish within the seascape at a level never before possible, revealing a few surprises. "We found that a number of juveniles had settled directly onto reefs, despite the fact that in several years of regular work in this area, we'd never visually observed them there," says Thorrold. "If you just observed distribution of juveniles, you would say the only important nursery habitat is coastal wetlands. But that's not true. Some fish settle right on the reefs, and the continental island proved to be very important habitat as well."

In other words, coastal wetlands are important juvenile nursery habitat for snapper in the Red Sea, but snapper are not obligated to use them, as was previously thought. Instead, the fish showed surprising plasticity, using a wide variety of habitats. "Our results showed remarkable complexity in the use of different habitats and movement patterns among them," McMahon says. Fish movements, the study makes clear, are more complex than a linear model of coastal fish moving out onto reefs.

The analysis also showed that seascape configuration plays an important and perhaps underappreciated role in determining the connectivity among essential habitats. "We found that coral reef fish made remarkable long-distance migrations from coastal wetlands across deep open water ? long considered a hard migration barrier for coral reef fish ? to offshore reefs," McMahon says. "That was, for me, the most surprising finding. Migration capability was far greater than we originally appreciated. It underscores the potential of significant connectivity within a large and complex tropical seascape." These results are particularly timely, given the increasing use of spatial management approaches in coral reef ecosystems, including networked marine protected areas.

The implication is that it isn't enough to protect adult habitat on coral reefs. Habitats that supply those reefs and the migration corridors that connect them also need protection. "As human activity continues to degrade and fragment tropical seascape habitats, quantitative understanding of the connectivity among them becomes increasingly important," says McMahon.

"Protecting the reef protects the adult fishes, but not an important component of their life history, as juveniles," says Thorrold. "It won't work to protect the reef but, for example, allow a hotel to be built on the seagrass beds and mangroves."

The study's quantitative method also provides a way to estimate ecosystem services that specific habitats provide to fisheries yields within a seascape, allowing for a more accurate accounting of these services and potentially providing a way to determine suitable value for mitigation and remediation purposes.

"We haven't known the value of those habitats to the reefs themselves when considering development," says Thorrold. "This technique allows us to quantify the importance of different habitats, and that makes it possible to come up with reasonable biological valuations for them. It hasn't been done yet, but is an important implication of the work going forward."

An important next step, the researchers say, is to analyze other globally important coral reef or tropical seascapes to see how general these patterns are.

Pearl Jam closes 2-day Made In America festival

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? If closing out a two-day festival with an intense two-hour set wasn't enough for Pearl Jam, then bringing out the man who organized it sealed the deal.

Jay-Z joined the group for its second-to-last encore Sunday with a rocking version of his signature hit "99 Problems."

While Jay closed out the first night of the Budweiser Made in America Festival, he handed the torch to the Seattle-based band grunge rockers and they did not disappoint.

Their 25-song set saw tens of thousands of fans jumping, dancing, and singing on the muggy September night to the band's well-known tracks like "Alive," ''Better Man," and "Jeremy."

For the song "Unemployable," Vedder told the crowd it was about a hard-working family man who did all the right things in life, but became the victim of job cuts. He said sometimes the so-called job creators are creating jobs outside the United States.

"I want to see more things made in America" Vedder said, to thunderous applause.

Vedder also urged people to get out and vote, before a rousing cover of the Clash's "Know Your Rights." Fittingly, the band ended the show with Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."

But Pearl Jam wasn't the only big story, as earlier in the day Run DMC performed for the first time in over a decade.

Taking the stage under a video banner that read "Jam Master Jay Forever," the Queens, N.Y., natives were well received by fans who danced to the music and sang along, some better than others. Beyonc? and Jay-Z strolled through the crowd flanked by security.

Their 40-minute set included "It's Tricky" to a sea of flailing arms, and "It's Like That." Run even put on a pair of namesake sneakers for "My Adidas."

But perhaps the most poignant moment came when Run talked about the breakup following the death of Jam Master Jay.

"After his assassination ... we put a silence on the group," Run said.

Jam Master Jay, Run DMC's longtime DJ, was fatally shot in 2002. The case was never solved.

Run introduced Jay's sons T.J. Mizell and Jam Master J'Son who honored their father with "some beats." Afterward, Run said, "Jay, I know you're looking down from Heaven."

Other notable performances included Frank Ocean and his Odd Future gang, performing an alternative rap set. Drake played the main stage, aptly named the Rocky stage since it sat at the bottom of the steps where the classic "Rocky" movie scene was filmed.

The Canadian rapper, who apparently never met an expletive he didn't like, energized the crowd with a 45-minute set. And if there was a roof over '70s punk band X, it would have blown off.

While the threat of rain loomed for most of the day, the only real precipitation was the Budweiser-soaked earth in front of the stages. The performances all ran on time and the sound was pretty amazing for an outdoor venue. Even the crowd was well behaved with enough space for them to roam.

In one funny moment, a large gentleman cut the bathroom line in the VIP area and opened the door to a portable unit for a brief inspection. Holding back the crowd, he said: "Right here, Miss B."

Beyonc? took a look, nodded her head, and the entourage continued on. Later, she walked with husband Jay-Z and Rita Ora to catch Drake's performance. It was that kind of night.

San Diego?s Real Estate Market to Have a Great 2nd Half of the Year After a Slow Start to 2011

The last couple months in San Diego?s real estate market have been fairly mellow. The transactions that were put under contract in the late part of 2010 and the very beginning of 2011 are now closing, yet total sales have dropped fairly consistently in terms of overall activity since last October. We typically see a lull in activity in February, as this is (seasonally adjusted) the slowest month on the calendar for real estate, however these last couple months have felt oddly sluggish. Why?

Some people point to Libya. Others chalk it up to the major earthquake in Japan. Yet some others take into account the larger socio-economic challenges that the US is currently facing with a recovering economy mired in debt. Does any of this stuff even matter? I think it has to at some level, but all real estate is local, and the absolute effects from Libya, the earthquake and the economy will be negligent in terms of the San Diego real estate market, however, it will have some effect on the overall consensus of the market, and the PERCEPTION of the buyers in the marketplace, which indirectly affect buyer?s overall thoughts and actions.

Take one look at any news channel?s program and you would think that the end of days is near. Prepare for the apocalypse, start hoarding water and foodstuffs so you can survive. It?s pretty serious stuff because you would be made to think that we are living in a country that is a sinking ship and we are all doomed. The Fear and Worry that is being spoon-fed to the general populous is sickening, but this topic is for another article altogether. What?s good to know is that a lot of good is being performed out there. The recovery is well on its way, and there are substantially positive outlooks with regards not only to real estate but the general economy as well. Certainly, the tough political issues we face are both challenging and immense, and they will no doubt have lingering effects for decades, yet I implore everyone to take a look around the world and challenge the fact that this country is still the best place to live, the best place to do business, and arguably the best country in the world. It?s so easy to get caught up with what?s wrong, when we should always be taking into account, appreciating, and not taking for granted what is right in our world today.

That being said, I have felt a momentum change within the San Diego real estate market over the past couple months, and when winter fully clears, and these global issues subside, and when most people realize that prices are great, interest rates are even better, and that buying a home is a solid financial move, this market is going to ABSOLUTELY POP.

Interesting studies were performed by Wells Fargo this last year to get an idea of buyer sentiment in the marketplace. The studies found that over 2/3 of buyers out there still believe that buying a home is a good idea and a sound financial decision even if the home was to decrease in value to some extent. In other words, the majority of people in this country firmly believe that the best investment on earth is?well? earth! That the majority of buyers feel this way is both exciting and predictive of a shift in overall thinking and consensus of buying a home in this market.

Nationally, things are looking OK. In San Diego however, things are only looking better. Since we were one of the first cities that corrected going into the recession, it?s easy to see that we would be among the first to come out strong. San Diego has an economy that is balanced with several well paying industries that employ the jobs that substantiate the values for local home prices. We are bolstered by a thriving telecom, biotech, and computational industries that were nonexistent 15-20 years ago. The defense and aerospace industry companies here are as strong as they have ever been, and tourism has really come on as a backbone that supports this local economy as well. On top of all of this, San Diego is the depository of the largest military presence in the entire country, and we are truly fortunate to have these revenues coming in as a result of our military proclivities that benefit all San Diegans in many ways, not just real estate related.

San Diego has a strong demand for housing because of these growing industries, and as the job sector continues to grow, and demand for employment increases, the market for housing will improve along with it. In fact, San Diego job growth has been positive and growing consistently, and is now at a 5 year high, at the same levels since before the recession.

Unlike cities built in the desert (like Las Vegas and Phoenix), there is very little build-able space remaining in San Diego County, and as a result we have a limited supply of land on which to build new housing. Now, here is where it gets interesting. Because we have a growing economy and a growing population, and because there is no real large tracts of land left to build on, and because there has been literally zero new construction created since the downturn in the economy, and because prices have decreased on average 25% from their peak, and because interests rates and the cost of money has been trending at 30 year lows, and because there IS NO SHADOW INVENTORY OF SAN DIEGO REAL ESTATE being held by banks, this city and county is poised to recover quite nicely over the next couple years.

If ever there was a perfect storm ? a perfect opportunity where a buyer could get in on the bottom floor of a recovery and ride the wave of ownership to financial independence, I believe this is it. The consensus of local industry professionals is quite good for the future outlook of this city and the real estate market. Yet, it seems after taking into account all of these macro-economic phenomenons that are currently in process, the market still finds itself in a lull.

Personally, if I am a buyer right now in this market, I can make aggressive offers and get a good deal without having to manage too much competition. This will all soon change. The fed will stop buying debt which will move to run up interest rates, and the inflation that they have been worrying about will begin to settle in ? although most people dont understand this enough to act on it now, they soon will once the higher prices and higher cost of money effects buying power.

There is a herd-mentality for buyers in real estate, and this was showcased especially in the running up of prices when they peaked in 2006. The same thing holds true today ? when a friends asks me how I doing (in business) and I respond with ?things are great!?, they then reply, ?wow?in this market?!?? I?ve often wondered why this is, but now I know that It?s because the herd thinks the market is supposed to be bad. Don?t be a part of the herd!

Understandably so, most people think that the market still sucks, and that is why in San Diego we have seen this 3 month lull in activity from the past couple months. Surely people believe in the value of home-ownership, but they think that this particular market ? right here ? right now ? is not great. This is the herd mentality in its quintessential form.

Once common consensus is reached that we have fully recovered, it?s easy to see how quickly prices will increase and this overall economy improves because real estate is the straw that stirs the drink of this economy, and everyone will tend to want to get into the game and gravitate back to real estate. Evidently all the prerequisites for a market recovery are coming into place. The question is, what are you doing to take advantage of the opportunity at hand today?

I wrote an article last year about the prediction for the 2011 San Diego Real Estate Market and how I felt that by the end of the year, we would end up in a positive single-digit growth percentage rate year-over-year for San Diego as a whole. My main concerns that would hinder a full-blown recovery were Unemployment, Excess Inventory, and People?s Perception of the market as a whole.

As I mentioned earlier, signs are truly positive with respect to San Diego employers as job growth is at 5 year highs. With regards to excess inventory, 2011 will be the year of the short sale for San Diego, but there is NO SHADOW INVENTORY in San Diego from past foreclosed properties. Foreclosed homes represent 1 of every 10 home sales in San Diego. Foreclosure activity is down over 30% from last year, in which 2010 was a off year from the foreclosure activity peak from the year before. Banks are not holding homes in San Diego. They may be elsewhere but not here. The excess inventory will be fully absorbed as a result of the growing demand and supply limits from the lack of new construction in San Diego over the past couple years. That leaves us with people?s perception of the market. This is the last piece of the puzzle that needs to be addressed. The local and national media does not help with this either, but the internet and social media will really come into its own and allow a clear message to emerge: that San Diego real estate is for up for sale and the opportunity at hand today is simply amazing.

This dynamic will not last for long, and it?s the herd mentality that is slowing the majority consensus that buying a home today is not only a good financial idea; it?s also a great opportunity, and needs to be acted upon sooner rather than later. Opportunities like this have only come a few times in the past several decades. This one so happens to be my generation?s opportunity to really take hold of one?s financial future and lay claim to financial independence and well being for our children and our retirement.

My hope for you is that if you are able to act, that you do so. If you are unable currently, then you work towards getting into a position to do so as quickly as you are able. This window is open, but not for long. I hope that you can make this market work for you in the best possible way.

Whenever I hear the number 0%, I hope that it refers to the interest rate I have to pay and not the interest rate that I have to earn. There are many different credit card offers out there, and of course when you see the 0% it seems like it would be the best option. But, when you sit and think about it you might wonder why one credit card would be 0% and the other would be 26%, what?s the catch?

It is not that the issuer is out to scam you. But you still need to look close. You never know what you are in for unless you read all the terms and conditions associated with the card.

0% Doesn?t Mean 0% Across the Board

While there are some legit 0% credit cards out there you need to look at the fine print before you simply assume that you can buy everything with no interest. The 0% is not a blank check that you cash anywhere. If applies to some types of transactions. This isn?t to say that you shouldn?t take advantage; you just need to be an aware consumer and make sure that you know how the 0% works.

If you have some credit card balances that you would like to transfer than you may want to look for a 0% credit card. There are many credit cards out there that offer 0% balance transfers. The more the transfer, the higher the saving. Many people use these cards to do away with those high interest credit cards so that they can actually start making a dent in the amount of money that they owe instead of just paying off the interest each month.

Many 0% credit cards have 0% interest rate offers on specified purchases. These may be purchases at specific stores or for specific products, but depending on what you purchase these credit card offers really can save you a lot of money. You?ll need to be sure to read all of the fine print on these cards to be sure that it is something that will save you as much money as you would hope.

Then there are the cards that use 0% as the way to ensnare you. Often times this 0% is good for the first six months or a year that you have a card. This is a nice way to consolidate debt, make big purchases, pay for car or house repairs, or just buy things that you have been putting off because you didn?t want to pay interest. One more interesting dimension of credit cards relates to rewards and cash back.

Before you choose any one of the 0% credit cards that you come across you should read through all of the features. The prudent buyer wants to know the interest rate, not just on day one but also on later days. Do you need to pay off all of the items that you bought during the 0% time? Whether you make money or lose money will depend on how smartly you use the card.
