Russia's opposition eyes popularity vote as catalyst for unity

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's fragmented opposition is to hold a nationwide Internet vote to identify its most popular leaders and elect a coordinating council ahead of planned mass anti-Kremlin protests later this year.

Although the opposition got tens of thousands of people onto the streets to protest against an allegedly rigged parliamentary election in December and against the return of Vladimir Putin to the presidency in a March vote, it has so far failed to capitalize on that success to build a more organized movement.

The Internet vote, set for October 7, is therefore being seen as an attempt to unite a group of individuals of differing political views who have traditionally failed to put their ideological and personal differences aside to take on the Kremlin.

"We need competition," anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny said in a video on his blog, adding that at least 100,000 people would need to vote for it to have legitimacy.

Navalny, who has become one of the opposition's best-known leaders in the last year, said the vote would breathe new life into a movement that - with new elections years away - is bereft of an immediate reference point for change.

"This opposition has been demoralized because it has not been taking part in competitive processes for a long time," said Navalny, calling on his own supporters to take part in the vote.

Although it has a handful of sympathizers, the opposition does not have any factions in the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, is rarely given air time on state TV, and is more popular in big urban centers such as Moscow and St. Petersburg than in the provinces.

"LACK OF LEGITIMACY"

In power either as president or as prime minister for the last 12 years, Putin has complained that the opposition lacks any leaders with whom the authorities can negotiate.

Navalny said the Internet vote was a response to that jibe and that the current leaders' lack of legitimacy has been the opposition's main problem.

Despite months of street rallies, it has failed to formulate a united political agenda beyond its general opposition to the Kremlin and has not raised sufficient funds to start putting together a movement that could one day present a serious challenge to Putin, who is due to stay in power until at least 2018.

Other anti-Kremlin politicians have also agreed to participate in the Internet vote though some are hesitant, pointing out that with his large online following Navalny will be the main beneficiary of such a vote.

The election commission that will organize the vote will include Ilya Segalovich, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Russia's most popular internet search engine Yandex.

Segalovich is No. 159 on Forbes magazine's list of richest Russians after Yandex's $1.4 billion initial public offering in New York in 2011.

The vote will elect 45 people to a coordinating council, which will then decide on tactical issues such as how and when opposition rallies are organized.

The three most prominent groups within the opposition - the liberals, the nationalists and the leftists - will be given quotas of five people each on the council to ensure that all of the movement's factions are represented.

For commercial property like shop space, the rental yield that you can command depends directly on the human traffic in the area. The third installment of the Derrick Storm short story trilogy starts right where readers left off in A Raging Storm. Former private investigator turned CIA recruit, Storm, has been out of sight since the failure of his last mission, which ended in death and disaster prior to the start of ?A Brewing Storm.

This time, the Derrick Storm story has much more direction, resulting in a plot that isn?t slow moving at all (unlike the awkwardly slow buildup for the climax of the second book). There are conversations between Storm and other characters in?this latest book, just as in the first two installments of the series, but they are blessedly brief: Derrick leaves London only to get sent overseas elsewhere.

Much of the novel is essentially one side trying to outdo the other. Between the CIA and the Russian President?s administration, there is a lot of ego to go around, more so when you factor in Derrick Storm?s skills and his current position as a small bug in a big web of lies and covert operations. Still, Storm knows what he?s doing. Recruited by Clara Strike for the CIA, he is a valuable and skilled operator who works outside the rules and without the agency red tape holding him back.

The story does tie into Storm?s past, as does the team that has been assembled to go after the Russian gold. Like a haunting shadowed ghost, there is a traitor in their midst. That could be more than Storm can handle; Who can he trust? The people he thinks have screwed him in the past or the people that he has just recently met?

There are moments in the story that line up a little too well, are too predictable or seem stretched too far within the realm of possibility. The dichotomy is strange considering it is usually one or the other, with a book usually being too easy to foreshadow or too impossible to believe plausible, not both as is the case with A Bloody Storm.

A small amount of fantasy exists in every authors mind, it adds to the creative flow, but in this case some events seem a tad scripted. There is a difference between a well-planned plot line and a storyline too pretty to be plausible. For example, Agent Showers happens to be conveniently located for rescue. Without spoiling the situation, it just seems too convenient.

April Showers is a complicated character, continually dealing with only half the information she needs. She eventually figures out just what the CIA and the Russians want, but becomes dead set on saving face. Torn between her sense of duty to her country and finding out who Storm really is, there isn?t an easy ride planned for Agent Showers. Too bad other parties involved are against her succeeding in any.

One of the new characters briefly introduced is Hasan Sadikov. He works for the Russians, he likes to read and he happens to torture people on a professional basis. His character rings true like church bells on Sunday. The qualities he posses are patience and skill and he tailors his methods to each individual person to achieve maximum information extraction. He isn?t crazy and he isn?t overly violent, which makes his brand of pin-point-precision?torture even worse. Readers will imagine him to be dark eyed and dark haired with a grave voice. His methods involving a plastic bag and the threat of inhaling soda crackers to shred your lungs is cringe worthy, like nails on a chalkboard.

The action towards the end, though, seems too rushed. One moment Storm and his people are outside of a major city and the next they are in a building within it. This is all done without any indication of how they got there. The ending of the book could easily have gone sideways by mere yards in a fiery gory explosion. Still, fans will be happy to know that a dash of blissful ignorance will do the reader some good in this case so that they don?t consider too deeply, how the book would have ended in the real world.

In the spy-on-spy world, trust is a key factor. It can lead women to fall for the wrong man; it can lead men to trust in the wrong leader and enemies to become friends in the end. If trust is the key to a successful mission, then all the gold in the world is worthless if a man or woman has a price. The search for a partner or people you can trust is often more perilous than expected.

That is the bottom line of the Derrick Storm trilogy. Even with a vague ending and a plot hole, there is space for the next possible installment of books. However, that same plot hole will make readers re-examine the book in finer detail to see if there was something they missed. In this case, do you trust the writer and know that he is messing with your head or do you trust your gut and just sit tight waiting for the next Derrick Storm novel? This is a fine if predictable ending for the trilogy so far, but hopefully there will be more Derrick Storm in the future.

Rating: 3.5/5 For a good read that finally picks up the pace but then rushes to finish. Parts of the book are predictable, but the writing is entertaining enough to keep the reader plugging along.

I love getting questions from readers, even though ?I don?t always feature them on Erosophia. ?This question is one that many people probably have, so I thought I?d share it and my response for those of you who won?t ask, but still want to know.

Today?s question is on the moral hazard of bisexuality:

I just discovered your blog today and it is truly enlightening. It?s great to see such reasoned application of Objectivism to sexuality.

My question is whether you?ve covered this topic before (I did not see it by searching the tab under ?Bisexuality?)

Should a bisexual male who can love women and is attracted to them, also have sex with men who he is only attracted to sexually? I am very turned on to the idea of receptive sex with men, sometimes, but I don?t think I can ever ?love? them. I guess I?m a Kinsey 2 maybe. I rarely, if ever, see a man in real life and get turned on. But I know receptive sex and having someone turned on by me is appealing.

If one were to fulfill those sexual desires, wouldn?t they be divorcing sex from emotion if they can?t love a man?

Stakeholders look to retail business creating jobs - Typepad

Nigeria?s burgeoning retail sector has the potential to create jobs and grow the economy exponentially within a short space of time and as such must be properly nurtured and encouraged, industry stakeholders have said.

This is just as foreign retail chains scramble for a foothold in the Nigerian market and South African brand, Shoprite prepares to open 700 more outlets across the country in the coming years.

Stakeholders at a BusinessDay Retail Conference in Lagos yesterday, however listed some of the challenges affecting retail business in Nigeria, as including logistics, distribution, power, funding and a dearth of skilled manpower and security issues, among others.

Joboy Christmas, manager corporate sales, Promasidor, said due to the viability and growing acceptance of retail business in the country, South Africa?s Shoprite plans to open about 700 outlets in the country in the next five to ten years.

This is so because they have increasingly warmed their way into the hearts of Nigerian consmers.

Juliet Anammah of Accenture in her presentation at the conference revealed that the retail sector contributes 19 percent of Nigeria?s GDP. She further observed that thinning margins in the developed economies, as well as slow economic growth have made the search for new markets imperative. Nigeria and Morocco, according to Anammah, have drawn the attention of retail giants like Walmart.

Anammah estimates that by 2020 Nigeria?s expenditure on non-durable goods will be N13 trillion naira; the agriculture, financial and real estate sectors are expected to be beneficiaries, as capital accumulates and the retail sector evolves. Inadequate logistic; limited access to credit for micro businesses and the slow adoption of online payment may delay this evolution, but it won?t stall the emergence of multiples of local and foreign retail businesses, she added.

Olumide Akindele, Diamond Bank?s head of Proposition Liabilities, said Nigerian banks lack the expertise to support retail outlets and as such, very few banks were in the business of funding retail outlets.

Diamond Bank has identified this gaping vacuum and has moved to fill it, Akindele said.

He added: ?We have done well to create SME programmes targeted at financing upcoming and established retail outlets.

This is evident in the capital, to the tune of N147.2 billion injected by the bank into the growth of SME?s in Nigeria in recent times.?

Olusola Owuro, Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, in a brief opening address, offered that Lagos was open to business and willing to learn from the private sector. The state, according to her, wants to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable economic development.

The variety and quality of consumer goods in the Nigerian retail market are rising, while prices are falling, as global mega stores including Shoprite, Spar and Game penetrate the sector, following the exit three decades ago of former market leaders such as Leventis , Kingsway and UTC stores.

Industry watchers say the coming of the foreign mega stores is spurred by expanding markets and political stability in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, as well as thinning margins in Europe and the US.

The expansion in the Nigerian market is attributed to the country?s growing middle class, which earns between N75,000 and N100,000 monthly, and now accounts for up to 23 percent of the national population, according to a study by Renaissance Capital.

A report of the study which relied on data by the African Development Bank put the average income per annum of this group at between N1 million and N1.2 million ($6,000 ? $7,000).

The growth in the middle class size in Nigeria, follows the pattern in the rise of the country?s national income. For instance, Nigeria?s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased five-fold from $46 billion in 2000, to $247 billion in 2011, while GDP per capita has increased to about $1,600.

Similarly, the country?s population has increased by about 33 percent during the same period, rising from 119 million to the current estimated 160 million.

According to a survey by Neilsen, a leading global provider of information and insights into consumers? behaviour, Nigerian consumers spend more on consumer packaged goods than other African countries.

As the most populous country in Africa and the second largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria?s growing middle class and consumer spending have made it an attractive destination to investors with keen interest in emerging markets.

Neilsen?s insight into the country?s market would further reinforce investors? appetite especially for those with interest in consumer packaged products.

?Nigerians earn more and spend more on consumer packaged goods (CPG) products than the African average,? the report has stated while noting that the middle and high income consumer segments which it categorised as Trendy Aspirants, Balanced Seniors and Progressive Affluents account for over 50 percent spending on CPG which is significantly higher than the Africa average of 45 percent.

According to the report, Nigerian consumers? spending patterns are influenced by traditions, family and the desire to maintain high standards. Of the seven consumer segments identified in the survey report, the family, affordability of the commodity, as well as trust in the same brand were common factors that determine consumption in the country.

It noted that 37 percent of total monthly household spending of Nigerian consumers go into food, personal care, and household products, while they often prefer tested products that are affordable and easily available.

About two decades ago, outlets such Leventis, Kingsway and UTC stores dominated the Nigerian retail market but then folded up. Swiss experts invited to conduct Arafat autopsy

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The chief Palestinian investigator looking into Yasser Arafat's 2004 death says Palestinian officials have invited Swiss experts to test the leader's remains for possible poisoning.

Wednesday's announcement by investigator Tawfik Tirawi, a former intelligence chief, came after weeks of zigzagging by Arafat's heirs over whether they would agree to dig up the remains.

Last month, a Swiss lab testing biological stains on Arafat's clothes detected elevated levels of radioactive polonium-210, reviving speculation about what killed Arafat. But the lab said the findings were inconclusive and that only testing Arafat's remains could bring clarity.

Lab officials have said polonium decays quickly and that an autopsy needs to be done soon. Darcy Christen, a spokesman for Switzerland's Institute of Radiation Physics, was not immediately reachable for comment Wednesday.

I try to fight against the tendency we have, as humans (and, admittedly, as a blogger) to focus on the positive side of relationships, while mostly ignoring all the other stuff. ?The embarrassing stuff. ?The stuff we didn?t anticipate at the outset, and the stuff that we?re too proud to share with others, even when we?re completely at a loss for how to get things back on track.

This reader question stopped me dead in my tracks. ?I tried to answer it as honestly as I can. ?Because this reader?s question is the essence of what most reader questions I see are about. ?I want her to know she?s not alone.

Dear TKB/Alison,

Our wedding is less than two months away and I feel completely alone. ?Even when he?s in the room, I feel alone, and he looks like he feels alone, too. ?It?s terrifying and painful and makes me angry. ?But mostly sad. ?And defeated. ?And I feel weaker than I ever thought I could, now that we?re at a point where I?m afraid to say what?s really on my mind. ?I think my biggest fear is that something I might say might make him realize this isn?t the relationship for him, and he?ll walk. ? And I?ll have said something that was the catalyst for our going separate ways. ?As I write this I?m crying my eyes out. ?I have nothing left in me. ?I walk around like a zombie, I feel so empty. ?We hardly talk about anything real. ?Not that we used to have deep, philosophical conversations but there was moooorrre to us. ?Something, I can?t put my finger on it. ?I felt like we used to be so much more in tune with one another. ?We?re drifting more and more apart with every ?conversation we have about the wedding. ?At this point I have had to ignore the fact that the wedding?s fast approaching just because I?m too afraid to push him farther away by nagging him about details which now seem so unimportant, in the scheme of things.

I?m really scared and have no one to talk to who I feel could understand or help me in my life. ?I?m scared I?m losing the man who used to send me text messages with potential baby names he thought up. ?I?m scared I?m losing myself. ?I?m scared of what it means for my relationship that I?m writing to (no offense) a blogger who I don?t even know in real life, instead of feeling comfortable enough to speak openly to the person I love and have chosen as my life partner.

Wedding planning seems to have been a conduit for bringing out all of our bad stuff. ?I wasn?t worried about it at first because I had heard it can get really tough, and it can sometimes test your relationship but I never thought it could get THIS tough. ?I?m finding out that we weren?t as connected as I thought we were over the last three years we?ve been together. ?(Or we were, but things have regressed?) ?I feel almost at a point where it feels like it?s never going to get better. ?It just seems he?s on autopilot and letting me guide things, and I feel like he is open to talking but only if he doesn?t have to do anything too introspective or hear me feel sad. ?

I?m not even trying to act like an innocent; I JUST DON?T KNOW WHERE WE WENT WRONG AND I?M TRYING. ?I?M WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. ?I love him so much, and I feel absolutely certain he authentically wanted to marry me before we set out to plan a wedding. ?We just stopped being *us* at some point, I don?t know when, but communication changed fundamentally between us and ever since then we?ve been drifting apart. ?I?m trying to be strong, and I think we were both trying really hard, we cried during some arguments months ago. ?Now it?s cold here. ?I feel almost at a point where I?m unsure if the love I thought I had even ever existed as something real in the first place. ?I don?t really know what it is I?m asking you, but I feel like my world is so small right now. ?Please help. ?I need to hear this could be normal between two people. ?But if it?s not, please just tell me. ?I?m done falling to pieces, I just want to know if I should keep trying or be strong and move on with my life.

Dear Reader,

Weddings are wonderful. ?Except when a certain thing happens.

The thing = when your focus becomes your wedding almost exclusively, and your relationship ? the very thing that got you to this point together ? is almost wholly ignored due to the false belief that a relationship is a self-sustaining entity requiring little food or water to survive. ?Natural human tendency is to want [the moment someone proposes] + [the moment someone says yes to that proposal] to = [the relationship is on lockdown.] ?That you?re officially committed forever and ever, and so now you can just focus on things like birch place cards and first dance songs without that nagging concern that one of you is ever going to change his or her mind. ?Because the truth of the human condition is that, at our core, we want to be loved for the truth of who we are. ?We seek acceptance from a lover, wholly and without hesitation.

But every human being is different. ?And every human being has his/her own insecurities, and unique needs, that they bring to a relationship. ?And it?s up to us as members of relationships to voice those needs, and to be true to ourselves about what we desire from our partners. ?And to want our partners to tell us what they want and what they need, and to be willing and to want to answer those wants and needs, so that they feel loved wholly and without hesitation. ?Some people are naturally able to achieve that balance. ?Others work through major issues finally to get to that serene point of mutual exchange and understanding. ?But that?s not real life for a lot of people. ?For most people, relationship will need to go through a lot of growing pains, before they can ever really feel open and connected in the truest most satisfying sense. ?They just need to be open to it, not to fear it, and to understand the importance and rewards involved.

The thing is, people often get caught up thinking that ?real love? is effortless. ?And they?re right.

But this is not about ?real love.? ?Real Love and a Successful Relationship are not synonymous.

This lies at source of most unexpected problems that come up in relationships, and is usually a major player along the road to divorce. ?Not wedding planning; *trusting* that a relationship will just sustain itself on the love you have. ?Even without significant effort put into it for long periods of time. ?Like, for example, while planning a wedding.

You have to talk to him. ?You have to share with him that you?ve been scared to say the things on your mind. ?Tell him the things you told me. ?If you don?t say exactly what?s on your mind, you will eternally regret it, regardless of whether you?re together or not 5, 10, 50 years from now.

What you have is extreme fear, and it?s controlling your entire body. ?So what I want you to do is decide to accept that being honest, right now, is the only option. ?EVEN IF IT MEANS BAD TIMES ARE AHEAD OF YOU, either with him, or without him. ?Even if it means you have to postpone the wedding. ?I need you to allow yourself NOT TO LET THE MONEY YOU?VE INVESTED, or your crippling fear of loss, to dictate your behavior within this relationship.

Above everything, we have to be true to ourselves, and to determine what we are looking for within our relationship with our partner. ?Normally I would just advise a bride to understand that wedding planning is hectic; think about it?

True openness is the path to personal truth, and the deepest kind of connection and understanding between human beings.

For some it comes easy. ?For others it?s a battle, and this all depends on the baggage we bring to relationships. ?And the honesty we are capable of having within ourselves.

Good luck. ?I think that, no matter how he responds, you are in incredibly self-aware, intelligent woman who I feel knows exactly what she wants and deserves out of her relationship. ?And I like your understanding that it takes two to bring things back on track. ?I just hope he?s both capable and willing to bear his soul to you. ?Because sometimes we?re afraid to be brutally honest with the people we love. ?But only then, can we ever hope to lead lives of honesty and real fulfillment.

Sorry that was so intense, but this is some fucking intense shit we?re dealing with here. ?That?s why I didn?t asterisk it by writing f**king or s**t. ?This is the real deal. ?Life. ?And I?m not interested in asterisking the truth. ?I hope I?ve helped. ?Though honestly all I really want to do right now is go hold you as a friend, and tell you that no matter how this all plays out, you?re going to be ok. ?Be strong, and know that honesty with oneself and honesty with loved ones is the single righteous path.
